PE- Physical Education Curriculum

Statement of Intent - Physical Education
We aim to build a curriculum that enables children to leave St Boniface with age expected levels of fitness (balance, co-ordination and agility) and a good understanding of how PE contributes to physical and mental well-being through our Complete PE programme. Our curriculum takes a holistic approach to physical development, recognising that the benefits of movement extend well beyond physical fitness. We not only aim to develop age-appropriate fitness levels, but also focus on nurturing key social and emotional skills. Through structured physical activities, students build essential communication, cooperation, and conflict resolution abilities. We aim to develop our children with skills that are directly transferable to the classroom environment.
Children are taught, and are given the opportunity to practice, basic skills which they can apply to a variety of games. We assess their application of skills through various games and sports aligning with the curriculum and Complete PE standards. They are encouraged to develop their own games using and applying skills taught. Through our enrichment programme, we have a specialist Sports Coach each Friday, who works across the school, building on skills and developing game- play through various sports. Class teachers have access to high quality CPD to equip them with confidence to teach PE. This year we have had a specialist games coach and gymnastics coach work across the whole school on Mondays and Thursdays.
We aim to offer a range of experiences and opportunities to flourish in a competitive setting: athletics on a purpose-built track, taking part in sport as part of a team in activities such as Golden League, Football Blitz, KS1 games and Cathletics. Children in Year 3 have weekly swimming lessons at Tooting Leisure Centre. During these sessions they develop confidence in the water and begin to swim using a range of strokes. Children in the early years use stories and imaginative play within their PE lessons to learn how to move their bodies in different ways and show case their skills in their sports day. Children in KS1 and KS2 take part in a whole school Sports Day at Tooting Bec Athletics track and the children work together to earn points for their houses.
We build in opportunities to promote fitness in everyday life through walking to and from activities: walking to swimming, to church and to the common. We regularly promote walking, scooting and bike riding through Walk to School week, Scooter Training and Cycling Proficiency As part of our TFL gold award we encourage children to consider how they can increase their physical activity in their journey to school. Our curriculum offers children’s an opportunity to witness sports in action through Olympian visits such as Victoria Ohuruogu, a bronze medallist. Many children across the school took part in our Move in May Relay Race, and the London mini Marathon.
We aim to offer half-termly Forest School activities, we encourage climbing, balancing, jumping and teamwork as well as promoting the use of outdoor space in our local area. We run a diverse and changing range of afterschool activities including football, basketball, street dance, tennis, and mindful activities promoting mental health. Through the clubs, we have established links with local clubs such as AFC Wimbledon and The Spencer Club.
We promote healthy eating in school, providing fruit at break-time and a water only policy in school. Through Science, PSHE and RHE children are taught the importance of a healthy, balanced diet. School Dinners are encouraged and the school council works with teachers and children to encourage healthy, balanced packed lunches. We have a ‘no fast food’ policy in the playground.

Day to Day activities:

St Boniface encourage children to participate in intra and inter school competitions, we try to offer a wide variety of afterschool clubs provided by specialist coaches, we host Road Safety, Bikeability and Scooter trainings and we encourage children to walk, ride or scoot to/from school daily along with healthy eating campaigns.  The Friends of St Boniface support keeping our children healthy with their annual ‘Move in May’ campaign.

Children in years 1 and 2 have lessons on-site with Tooting Gymnastics coaches.

Children in years 3 and 4 attend weekly term time swimming lessons at Tooting Leisure Centre and games, dance or gymnastics are taught on rotation.

Our external Coaches have worked with the school for a number of years, which means they are familiar with the pupils and the school. The games coach also trains the football team and afterschool basketball club.

We try to raise awareness of sporting achievements in assembly and for Sports Day, Football Blitz and KS1 Games to be focused on pupils participating in House groups, where they can excel as individuals and in team activities.
