Our school values and promotes the individuality of all children, irrespective of gender, age, ethnicity, disability or background. We are committed to giving all our pupils every opportunity to achieve the highest of standards by offering a broad and balanced curriculum and having high expectations of every child.
We do not discriminate against anyone, be they pupil, parent, staff or visitor and we challenge personal prejudice and stereotypical views whenever they occur.
We constantly strive to remove any forms of indirect discrimination that may form barriers to learning for some groups. We seek to ensure that all pupils have equal access to the full range of educational opportunities provided by the school.

St Boniface Primary School is a Catholic primary school in Graveney Ward within the London Borough of Wandsworth. It provides a primary education within a strong Catholic ethos for children aged from three to eleven. The school serves the local Catholic Community with the majority of pupils coming from St Boniface Parish which extends into the neighbouring borough of Merton.
A significant proportion of our pupils are from minority ethnic backgrounds, with over half speaking English as a second language. Our pupils are from a range of socio-economic backgrounds. We have a below average number of children eligible for Free School Meals. An average number of pupils are identified as having Special Education Needs and Disabilities. An average number of pupils are identified as More Able and/or Gifted and Talented.
With such a range of backgrounds, ethnicities and abilities, we encourage our pupils to value and celebrate difference through many aspects of our school life. Careful planning and delivery of the curriculum means that all of our children make good progress, with the vast majority achieving age appropriate levels.
At St.Boniface, we strive to eliminate all forms of racism and racial discrimination; promote equality of opportunity; and promote good relations between people of different racial and ethnic groups.
Should a racist incident occur, we will deal with it in accordance with school procedures.
We promote an understanding of diverse cultures through the topics studied by the children, and we reflect this in the displays of work shown around the school.
Our curriculum reflects the attitudes, values and respect that we have for minority ethnic groups. For example, children learn about the importance of Diwali to Hindus in our ‘Other Faith’ religious education units.
At St.Boniface we are committed to meeting the needs of any pupils with disabilities, as we are to meeting the needs of all within the school. All reasonable steps are taken to ensure that these children are not placed at a substantial disadvantage compared with non-disabled children.
Teachers modify teaching and learning as appropriate for children with disabilities. For example, additional time may be given for an activity to be completed or teaching materials may be modified.
We deliver a range of interventions and use a variety of resources to enable children to make progress in every aspect of their learning. For example, social skills groups and fine and gross motor skills groups are run on a weekly basis.
St Boniface is a three tier Edwardian building and is not easily accessible. Our commitment to accessibility planning has resulted in an increase in ramped entrances being added to the main school building as well as external buildings such as the school hall. The nursery building and the Wynfrith Room have a disabled toilet which is accessible to wheelchair users.
At St.Boniface we realise that although gender is one of the key factors affecting educational performance (affecting sub-groups of boys and girls in different ways), social class and ethnic origin are also linked to performance and are closely monitored.
To raise the achievement of both boys and girls, a number of measures have been put in place:
- we ensure that our displays and resources appeal to both boys and girls
- boys’ reading groups have been created to encourage and enthuse hesitant readers
- maths activities and displays have been carefully planned for to engage and improve girls’ progress in maths.
Evidence relating to equalities is integrated into our self-evaluation documentation. Our equality objectives are integrated into the school improvement plan. We keep our equality objectives under review and report annually on progress towards achieving them.
Who is responsible?
At St Boniface primary school we believe that promoting equality and raising the achievement of all pupils is the responsibility of the whole school staff.
The role of the Head and Leadership Team
It is the headteacher’s role to ensure that all staff implement the school’s approach to equal opportunities and making sure steps are taken to address the school’s stated equality objectives. The headteacher is responsible for enabling reasonable adjustments to be made, in relation to disability, in regard to students, staff, parents / carers and visitors to the school. Where additional funding is available for raising the achievement of specific groups of pupils, the Head Teacher will ensure that the additional resources are used appropriately. They will be targeted on the basis of identified need and outcomes are monitored. Together, the headteacher and the leadership team will promote respect for other people in all aspects of school life.
The role of the Governors
The governors are responsible for making sure that the school complies with the relevant equality legislation and will continue to ensure that all members of the school community are treated fairly and equally. A member of the governing body has a watching brief regarding the implementation of this policy.
The role of the staff
Class teachers will do their best to ensure that all pupils are treated fairly and with respect and foster good relations between groups. They will strive to provide resources which give positive images, and which challenge stereotypical images of minority groups when selecting classroom materials. They will ensure that schemes of work, for example, will teach children about significant contributions women or individuals from minority ethnic groups have made in history. All school staff will challenge any incidents of prejudice or racism. All incidences are recorded and drawn to the immediate attention of the Deputy or Head teacher.
The role of pupils
Pupils will learn to treat each other with respect and have the confidence to report incidents to adults.
The role of parents/carers
Parents and carers will be encouraged to reinforce the school’s approach to equal opportunities by reinforcing its ethos at home.
All staff are given equal opportunities to take part in staff training as and when required and have access to courses appropriate to their professional development and responsibilities as well as statutory requirements. All new staff and governors will be presented with this equality information and will have it explained to them as part of induction arrangements.
We observe good equalities practice in staff recruitment, retention and development. We ensure that policies and procedures should benefit all employees and potential employees, for example in recruitment and promotion, and in continuing professional development:
- whatever their age
- whether or not they are disabled
- whatever their ethnicity, culture, religious affiliation, national origin or national status
- whatever their gender and sexual identity, and with full respect for legal
rights relating to pregnancy and maternity.
